GAMMA TWO, INC. was founded by Dr. Louise F. Gunderson and Dr. James "Jim" P. Gunderson. The founders completed their doctorate degrees at the University of Virginia in 2003, and returned to the Denver, CO area immediately upon graduation. In 2009, a longtime associate, Mark C. Vappi was enticed away from his career at Microsoft and came on board as Gamma Two's Vice President of Operations. Company HistoryGAMMA TWO, INC. was incorporated in Colorado on June 23, 2003 as the continuation of Gunderson and Gunderson, Inc., a business formed in 1997. The corporation was organized to provide advanced artificial intelligence software to businesses in the financial and logistics sectors. In the process there was continuing research into computational models of real world behavior, that resulted in a number of proprietary algorithms which enable computers to recognize and reason about the world in a manner based on biological principles. Gamma Two Robotics is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gamma Two Inc. |

Why Robots? Why not robots?! Both founders have a long-held interest in robotics; a "Rosie The Robot™" to clean the house and make meals, a companion robot such as Andrew Martin, an android (as seen in "Bicentennial Man"), built to serve and protect, never tiring nor shying away from the dull, dirty or dangerous jobs that people don't really like to do and therefore often don't do well. Beginning in early 2006, the team at Gamma Two focused on designing, building, and testing a Cybernetic Brain™ for mobile robots. This work continued over the next three years, culminating in the first prototype of the Basic Service Level (BSL) robots (known as "Basil" around the lab.) This series of robot is designed to work primarily in a home, where they will interact with people and their pets on a daily basis. Unlike industrial robots, which are unaware of their surroundings, the BSL series robots act in close concert with people, avoiding obstacles as they navigate autonomously around the house. They are intended to enable people to live more comfortably in their homes as they age, and to provide support for individual with disabilities. In January 2010 the Gamma Two team traveled to Las Vegas to exhibit their robots at the International Consumer Electronic Show. "The interest in our robots was impressive. We received inquiries about the robots' abilities, especially for security. We researched the problem faced by the industry, and determined that we could meet a serious and growing need for reliable "patrol and report" officers, said Dr. Louise Gunderson, CEO and co-inventor. "Our ultimate goal is still to provide a useful, affordable robot for home assistance, helping people age-in-place and providing them with a tool that improves their lives. All the development going into the Vigilus™ line of robots will fold into the home assistance line; but the path to production for the security robot is shorter, and sales of this robot will fund the future development of all Gamma Two robots" said Dr. Jim Gunderson, CTO and co-inventor. |
